Statistics and Data Science 12 is an elective course that focuses on mathematics and statistics concepts and skills used in many different professions. In this course students will learn to understand, ask questions of, and represent data through project-based units. Students will develop their understanding of data analysis (how we clean, transform, and process raw data to help organizations draw out relevant information for making informed decisions) and of the importance of data in society. Students will also participate in the data science process of formulating a question, considering/gathering and organizing data, modeling, analyzing and synthesizing, and communicating the results. This course is designed to prepare students for introductory statistics in post-secondary programs as well as learn the value of statistical analysis in a range of real world contexts.
Statistics and Data Science 12 is an academic credit but DOES NOT satisfy the graduation requirement for a mathematics course at the grade 12 level. Students must still take another recognized grade 12 mathematics course. This may include:
● Graduation level courses: Mathematics Essentials 12, Mathematics at Work 12
● Academic level course: Mathematics 12
● Advanced level course: Pre-Calculus 12, Calculus 12
This course will center on big ideas related to data and statistics and is designed to prepare students for introductory statistics at post-secondary programs as well as learn the value of statistical analysis in the real world.
Rather than studying discrete topics related to data and statistics, the course is organized around big ideas, a series of related guiding questions, and the opportunity to engage in data investigations. Inquiry and project based learning are an important component of the instructional model. Through a combination of explicit instruction, student investigation, and collaboration, students will develop the conceptual understanding and skills needed to successfully complete each investigation. Outcomes from a variety of sub-topics may be taught and assessed in each investigation.
